Combat Arnis / Modern Arnis

Based on Professor Remy Presas’s Modern Arnis, Combat Arnis / Modern Arnis is a simple yet effective system covering all ranges of combat.

Modern Arnis is what the Professor calls "the art within the art". All motions translate into others whether it is empty hand or with weapons. Using this art within the art Combat Arnis / Modern Arnis teaches one to react with motions that allow for flexibility and spontaneity. As one progresses the space between action and reaction, the space where motion intercepts and becomes the attacking motion happens. This is the "FLOW" the space that allows for real self-defence.

"FLOW" gives one the chance to use biomechanical responses naturally. Professor Presas found the "FLOW" by studying various styles of Filipino martial arts and utilizing the underlying principles of each of those arts. Each art has different techniques, but the conceptual motions are basically the same and the underlying principles are the same. By concentrating on the principles, which utilize concepts to apply them, Professor Presas discovered the way to teach fighting arts in a natural, progressive manner.

Combat Arnis / Modern Arnis is more than just ‘stick fighting’; rattan sticks are one of the main training tools used, however the skills learned can be applied to a variety of tools or to empty hands fighting.

This enables the student able to use any orthodox or improvised weapon and use it effectively to defend themselves or to use empty hand techniques to do the same. In effect, the weapon becomes merely an extension of the body
In our system we train with weapons prior to learning empty hands skills as this teaches how to use your body efficiently to generate power, this then directly transfers to empty hand skills. This will also lead to a good sense of timing, increased speed of your reflexes and ability to feel, or ‘read’, the opponent’s intentions

CSSD/SC and Combat Arnis / Modern Arnis has philosophy of simplicity, practicality and innovation. In reality techniques used must be simple because after our heart rate reaches 145 beats a minute fine and complex motor don’t work anymore. Photo

This leaves us with gross motor skills all the big easy to do movements (strike, kick, push open close.) In other words the tricky stuff doesn’t work. No technique is guaranteed to 100% of the time, so if it doesn’t look for your next opportunity to counter your opponent effectively.

The effectiveness of our techniques could be the difference between our survival or a much bleaker option.
This means the techniques must be able to be used by ordinary people in a short period of time. Combat Arnis / Modern Arnis teaches techniques that do not require brute strength for success, but rather evasion and deflection and counter.  In keeping with this philosophy the core concepts and techniques in our system are learned very early in training.
It is not about the number of techniques that you know, but rather how effectively you can use the technique
